Lure Review -Zoom Fluke
Let’s talk about soft jerkbaits. In particular, let’s talk about the Zoom series of flukes. For those of you who may be new to the party, think about all those problems you run into fishing a traditional jerkbait around grass and hard cover. Those treble hooks hanging from the bottom of the bait keep getting caught up and your bait just won’t swim correctly. When you are rigging up a soft jerkbait, you are typically using a 3/0, EWG hook and rigging that bait Texas-rigged. This will allow your bait to swim weedless and get the action you are looking to impart; it will resemble a dying baitfish.
My favorite in this category, without question, is the Zoom Super Fluke. This bait flat out catches fish. Let’s dive in and see some of the reasons why this is my go-to bait when the jerkbait bite is firing up, but the conditions call for something other than the traditional, treble hooked jerkbait.
Reason #1 – This bait is incredibly versatile. When you think about fishing with a jerkbait, you think about twitching your rod a few times and then pausing. During that pause, the bait will either suspend, slowly rise, or slowly fall, depending on the style you have chosen. With this bait, you get the same twitching and darting when you work your rod, but when you pause it will go into sort of a slow death spiral and the bass that are tracking it lose their minds when this happens. If they don’t grab it on the fall, they will certainly slam it on the twitch. What makes this bait so versatile, is the ability to fish it like a top water. If you increase the speed of your twitches, the Super Fluke will dance on the top of the water like a fleeing bait fish. The bites you will get fishing this way will rival some of your best frog bites. My favorite way to fish it is to twitch my rod quickly around grass or cover and when I find a hole, stop and let it sink for a few beats and then twitch again. I promise you will need to be holding on when that bite comes.
Reason #2 – The color selection Zoom gives us in this bait is unbelievable. I challenge you to find a color that doesn’t work for you or the body of water you are fishing. There are a couple colors that I am partial to for my fishing. My favorite color is without a doubt, Smokin’ Shad. As the name suggests, it has a great base shad color with tons of glitter. The flash the glitter puts of attracts bass to your lure and makes it stand out if you are fishing a bait ball or during a shad spawn. My second go to color is Glimmer Blue. This is a white, with blue flake fluke. It works great in the spring and in muddier or milk chocolate water. If you prefer other colors, chances are Zoom makes it. Reason #3 – There are three sizes of this bait. This is important depending on the body of water you are fishing or what size bait the bass you are targeting are eating. It’s no secret that the bigger the bait the bigger the fish, but you may be at a body of water that has smaller bait fish and you will need to downsize. Zoom offers the Magnum Super Fluke that comes in at 7”, the Super Fluke at 5.25” and finally the Super Fluke Jr at 4”. I am partial to the Super Fluke and the Super Fluke Jr. If you need to go a little smaller you can find a solid body Tiny Fluke that measures out a 3”, but they do limit the colors on this lure. You can use this if the bass are feeding on fry and if you are fishing a drop shot.
Reason #4 – The Zoom Super Fluke is very durable. This could be incredibly important for a couple of reasons. First, is an obvious reason, you will save money. This lure will survive multiple fish catches. You will be replacing it less often than you would with a competitor. If you are like me, you do not have a unlimited amount of money to spend on fishing. Also, this could be a time saver for you. If you find yourself in a situation where the bite is firing up the last thing you want to do is constantly rerig your bait. A lure that lasts longer will keep you in the game. If you do find yourself in a situation where you do have to replace your lure, don’t worry too much. This bait is also one of less expensive baits in this category so don’t worry if you have replace them.
