Review – Deps Evoke Square Bill

It’s no secret that Japanese lure manufacturers have entered the Bass Lure game.  It’s also no secret they aren’t bashful about the prices they charge.  The question I hear over and over is – are they worth it. That is certainly a valid question for some of the offerings from The Land of the Rising Sun. The answer in this case is unequivocally, without a doubt, 100%, emphatically – YES!!!  From the first time I threw it, I knew this was a bait that I must make sure I have in my tackle box at all times.  Sure, it’s a little pricy, most things in life worth having are. I am all about value and not overspending.  But if you are saving money in some places, say the Zoom Super Fluke (see blog library), then you can splurge in other places.  Let’s talk about why this is a lure worth splurging on.

1)      It’s ability to deflect off hard cover.  We all know the frustration of throwing our favorite square bill only to dig into a piece of wood and lose it forever.  This bait is designed to deflect like a Balsa bait. When you feel it hit cover, just give it a pause and it will back up and rise away from what it hit and then you can start cranking again.  This will more than likely create a reaction strike.

2)      The tight wobble is something to behold. The vibration you feel from this lure is helpful in letting you know what is going on underwater. I would compare it to the movement you get from a bladed jig.  You will notice your rod tip bouncing all over the place.  After throwing it a few times, you will easily be able to pick up the difference between cover, grass, rock, and a bite.  Speaking of grass, this bait pulls through grass like no other crankbait I have thrown.

3)      You can cast this lure a mile. Most Balsa baits in this style are very light and difficult to cast a long distance.  The Deps Evoke 2.0 comes in at 5.8 oz. (almost 18 grams).  Once you get it dialed in you can make that bomb cast down the shoreline and run it through multiple areas where fish may be hiding.  I have nearly spooled my reel and had to dial it back in a little bit.

4)      It comes ready to fish. I know a lot of you will immediately change out the hooks and split of any lures you buy.  The hardware on this lure is high quality. The split rings are stout, and the hooks are sharp, super sharp.  Of course, this is just my opinion, if you want to spend the extra money to change out to your favorite hardware, you are completely free to do so.

5)      The colors are awesome. That is a feature we see in a lot of baits that come from Japan.  The manufacturers take a lot of pride in their attention to detail and Deps is no different.  They may not have as many colors as Megabass throws at us, but the choices they do have are pretty cool.  May favorite is Gunmetal Chart Glitter, but you can click the link below and decide for yourself.

The bottom line, in my opinion, is you owe it to yourself to give the Deps Evoke a shot.  Hit me up on social media and let me know what you think.
